Emotional First Aid for Responders and Survivors of Crime

Aim

The session is designed to educate a group of critically incident stressed (CIS) people after a critical incident on some of the reactions or responses they may or may not encounter cognitively, emotionally, physically, behaviourally and spiritually.

Description

The session is conducted in an open and interactive forum with persons who have experienced a significant incident. The incident can be one initiated by nature or mankind. The incident may be accidental or precipitated by a crime.

The session provides 3 hours education then 1 hour demobilisation.

  • the types of events that cause CIS
  • the various human responses to CIS
  • the contribution of the three tenses to CIS
  • the immediate, delayed & cumulative nature of CIS
  • the primary, secondary & tertiary affected by CIS
  • the interventions
  • practical first
  • violent events – victims of crime
  • the sensory stimuli
  • the flashbacks
  • reducing the impact at the scene and afterwards
  • the expectations of recovery
  • the fantasy factor
  • the survivor
  • who cares for the carer?

Pre-Requisites

There are no formal pre-requisites for this session, however particpants should have a link to the event or persons affected by the event, that would warrant their attendance.
