Hot Work - Work In Accordance With An Issued Permit

Aim

The aim of this course is to ensure that people working under a permit to work understand the system, know the limitations of the permit under which they are working and comply with all the requirements of the permit. 

The course also ensures that participants have competent awareness of workplace fires, detail prevention strategies and demonstrate the correct response to a fire by correctly using portable fire fighting appliances.

Description

This Hot Work Permit Course is designed for persons who are typically employed in a management, supervisory, engineering capacity or employed in the role of a permit holder, and are responsible for the raising and completion of permits relating to Hot Work tasks in the workplace. 

The course provides participants with the OH&S and legislative requirements relating to Hot Work and fire safety risk control measures associated with hot work tasks and company policy and procedures to ensure the health and safety of any persons required to undertake hot work.

The program provides an overview of strategies for planning and executing hot work tasks with an emphasis on fire prevention, encompassing strategies for contingency planning for failures in safe systems of work and first response fire extinguishment. 

The course also provides competency in fire awareness, the importance of prevention strategies and an awareness of the correct applications and limitations of portable fire fighting appliances such as fire extinguishers & workplace fire hose reels.

Minimum of 8 to 24 hours (1 to 3 days) dependant on work group prerequisite knowledge and work environment

Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Nationally recognised Statement of Attainment as well as a Risk Response & Rescue Certificate.

Course Content

  • Definition of Hot Work
  • Circumstances that warrant the raising of a hot work permit
  • Recognise the importance of different work permits
  • Comply with permit conditions including the wearing of appropriate PPE
  • Risk management and reporting procedures
  • Planning, establishing, rehearsing of emergency response procedures
  • Legislative requirements relating to work permits
  • Principles of fire extinguishment.
  • Raising the alarm.
  • Classes of fire.
  • Determining if it is safe and appropriate to use first attack fire fighting equipment.
  • Principles of fire approach and fire evacuation.
  • Correct selection, use, and application of portable fire fighting extinguishers.
  • Practical fire fighting with CO2 type fire extinguishers.
  • Practical demonstration of dry chemical power type and AFF foam type fire extinguishers.
  • Principles of fire fighting with hose reels / fire blankets.
  • Procedures to be followed after first attack fire fighting equipment have been used.

Pre-Requisites

There are no specific pre-requisites to this course however participants must ensure they are able to:

  • Collect and disseminate information
  • Develop and complete  documentations
  • Work in a team
  • Be able to participate in practical activities
  • Be able to transfer the skills to other contexts, and
  • Deal with unplanned events

Assessment

Participants must be able to identify a confined space, identify hazards and risks and detail safe entry and work requirements. They must be able to demonstrate sound interpersonal and literacy skills.

They must also be able to cite relevant legislation and company policy requirements associated with confined space strategies including emergency response procedures. Both written and practical assessments will be conducted.
