Height Safety - Awareness

Aim

The aim of this program is to give participants a basic knowledge of safe work at heights and fall prevention.

Description

The Safe Work at heights and Fall Prevention program is designed for persons whose daily work exposes them to areas where there is a potential for falls from height, while not necessarily required to work at height.  The program provides participants with an awareness of the OH&S and legislative requirements and procedures to ensure the health and safety of any persons required to work at heights.  This program is designed to provide a basic awareness and does not qualify participants to enter work at height.

Unit/s of Competence

There are no recognised Units of Competency awarded for this course.

Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Risk Response & Rescue Certificate of Participation.

Course Content

  • An overview of legislation and responsibilities associated with heights
  • Training requirement for employees working at heights, i.e. certificates of competency, etc
  • Circumstances that warrant the establishment of height safety systems
  • Inspection and correct fitting of harnesses
  • Categories of height safety systems, passive, active, fall arrest, fall restraint
  • Awareness of potential shock loads
  • Consideration for anchorages and fastening points
  • Correct application of slings and software
  • Considerations for first aid following a height safety system failure
  • Awareness of suspension trauma or harness induce syndrome
  • Considerations for recovery of workers in fall arrest

Pre-Requisites

There are no specific pre-requisites to this course however participants should ensure they are able to collect information, work as a small team and comprehend basic written documentation.

Assessment

Participants must be able to identify work at heights, identify hazards and risks and express a basic knowledge of the requirements for height safety work procedures.
