Height Safety & Emergency Evacuation Procedures

Aim

This program provides competency to identify hazards associated with heights, implement safe work procedures within defined height safety systems and plan, establish and rehearse safe and rapid evacuation of persons from workplaces at heights.

Description

This program provides information relating to safe work at heights using the risk management hierarchy of controls from the establishment of safe systems of work through to the safe and rapid evacuation from workplaces at heights.

It is designed for workers with a need to work unsupervised or supervise others at heights in the working environment and provides a detailed knowledge of applicable risk management, fall prevention systems, escape and recovery procedures.

This program is designed to meet the requirements of height safety legislation including the actions in an emergency and the recovery of workers in fall arrest.

The course will be customised to include site specific procedures and equipment in the planning phase.

Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Risk Response + Rescue Certificate and a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.

Course Content

  • Legislation and Responsibilities
  • Training requirement for employees working at heights, ie certificates of competence
  • Circumstances that warrant the establishment of height safety systems
  • Categories of height safety systems, ie fall arrest, fall restraint
  • Hazard Identification
  • Risk Assessment
  • Practical application of Height safety risk control measures applying the ‘hierarchy of controls’
  • Height safety equipment and system compatibility
  • Correct application of knots, slings and software
  • Anchorages and fastening points
  • Fall arrest equipment and techniques
  • Escape equipment and techniques
  • Consideration of rescue and recovery of workers in fall arrest
  • Servicing and maintenance of equipment

Pre-requisites

There are no specific pre-requisites for this course although participants should ensure they do not suffer from vertigo (dizziness at heights) or acrophobia (fear of heights).

Assessment

Participants must be able to implement height safety procedures, identify hazards and risks and detail safe work requirements. They must also be able to operate whilst wearing safety equipment and demonstrate emergency evacuation and recovery procedures when working at heights.
