Fire Fighting - Workplace

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide competency and confidence in the knowledge and skills to assess and correctly react in a fire emergency utilising available workplace resources.

Description

There is no WorkCover NSW endorsed training courses or certificates relating to the operation of fire fighting equipment or fire fighting generally.

This course is intended for employees who require an appreciation of fire risk management, the importance of prevention strategies and an awareness of the correct applications and limitations of portable fire fighting appliances such as fire extinguishers & workplace fire hose reels. This course also includes methods of fire spread and fire containment strategies.

Staff that will benefit from this training program include wardens and members of emergency control teams, persons engaged in hot-work activities, confined space standby persons and other persons who may be required to undertake an emergency response to workplace incidents.

Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Risk Response & Rescue Certificate stating the information covered, duration of training, date of issue, location of training and general remarks.

A Nationally Accredited Statement of Attainment recognised within the Australian Qualification Framework.

Course Content

  • Hazards and risks associated with fire,
  • Recognising unsafe conditions,
  • Chemistry of fire,
  • Principles of fire extinguishment,
  • Methods of fire spread,
  • Raising the alarm,
  • Classes of fire,
  • Determining if it is safe and appropriate to use first attack fire fighting equipment,
  • Principles of fire approach and fire evacuation
  • Correct selection, use, and application of portable fire fighting extinguishers,
  • Strategies for fire containment,
  • Practical fire fighting with CO2 type fire extinguishers,
  • Practical demonstration of dry chemical power type and AFF foam type fire extinguishers,
  • Fire fighting with fire hose reels / fire blankets
  • Procedures to be followed after first attack fire fighting equipment has been used.

Pre-Requisites

There are no specific pre-requisites for this course.

Assessment

Participants must be able to implement fire fighting safety procedures and identify hazards and risks associated with fires. They must also be able to identify and correctly use portable fire fighting appliances.
