Undertake Helicopter Winch Operations

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills required to be winched in and out of a helicopter.

Description

This course is designed for personnel whose work or mission requires the competency to be winched from a helicopter when the degree of the slope or the nature of the ground or the presence of obstacles prohibits a safe landing or a hover-exit.

Duration

The course can be conducted over a nominated time of 2 days.
Duration may vary with different work groups’ requirements.

Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and a Risk Response & Rescue Certificate of Completion.

Course Content

  • Terminology and Definitions
  • Identifying Hazards and Risks
  • Undertaking operations in accordance with OH&S procedures, legislative and operational guidelines
  • Site selection for winching operations
  • Preparation, inspection, carriage and stowing of equipment prior to, during and following exiting from the helicopter
  • Correct method of carrying various types of equipment 
  • Following instructions and procedures within the helicopter
  • Correct procedures for entering and exiting from the helicopter including correct sequencing of activities on different terrains
  • Actions to minimise movement during weight transfer in the helicopter 
  • Safety and emergency procedures

Pre-Requisites

Assessment

Participants must be able to:

  • Undertake operations in accordance with OH&S procedures, legislative and operational guidelines
  • Prepare, inspect, carry and stow equipment prior to, during and following exiting from the helicopter
  • Demonstrate safe loading procedures of equipment
  • Follow instructions and procedures within the helicopter
  • Apply correct procedures for entering and exiting from the helicopter including correct sequencing of activities
