Rappel From Helicopter

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide the knowledge and skills required to exit a hovering helicopter via a rope.

Description

This course is designed for personnel whose work requires competency to exit a helicopter when the height of the obstacles on the ground prohibits winch operations.

Duration

The course can be conducted over a nominated time of 1 day.

Duration may vary with different work groups’ requirements and experience of vertical mobility.

Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment and a Risk Response & Rescue Certificate of Completion.

Course Content

  • Terminology and Definitions
  • Identification of hazards and risks
  • Undertaking operations in accordance with OH&S procedures, CASA regulations, company’s operations manual, rappelling equipment & manufacturer’s guidelines
    Site selection for rappelling operations
  • Preparation, inspection, carriage and stowing of equipment prior to, during and following exiting from the helicopter
  • key roles and relevant responsibilities of helicopter crew including rappel dispatcher
  • Correct method of carrying various types of equipment
  • Following instructions and procedures within the helicopter
  • Correct procedures for exiting from the helicopter including correct sequencing of activities from different heights and on different terrains
  • Actions to minimise movement during descent from helicopter
  • Safety and emergency procedures
  • Correct procedures and techniques for sequencing and controlling rappelling, braking, landing and disconnecting
  • Appropriate communication processes with crew persons and rappel dispatcher including demonstration of emergency hand signals

Pre-Requisites


Note. If participants are not trained to an acceptable standard of vertical mobility, competency for abseiling will have to be attained before attending the one-day course for rappelling from the helicopter.

Assessment

Participants must be able to:

  • Undertake operations in accordance with OH&S procedures, legislative and operational guidelines
  • Prepare, inspect, carry and stow equipment prior to, during and following exiting from the helicopter
  • Follow instructions and procedures within the helicopter
  • Apply correct procedures for entering and exiting from the helicopter including correct sequencing of activities
  • Demonstrate of rappelling  procedures from different heights and on different terrains.
