Down the Wire Specialist

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to work safely in all environments accessible with helicopters.

Description

This extensive course is designed for rescue personnel like paramedics or fire-fighters who are transported by helicopters for the completion of punctual or daily missions.

Participants will be trained for all the different techniques involved in helicopter transport:
  • Hover-exit
  • Winch
  • Sling-loading

The course will also cover a tailored training aiming at bringing each participant to a high level of autonomy and mobility in the different environments accessible by helicopter:
  • Water
  • Alpine
  • Vertical

Duration

The course can be conducted over a nominated time of 10 days.

Duration will vary with the participants' level of competency in the different environments covered.

Unit/s of Competence

Accreditation

The course itself is not nationally accredited but the participants who successfully complete the program will receive nationally recognised statements of Attainment for the different competencies and a Risk Response & Rescue Certificate of Completion.

Course Content

  • Terminology and Definitions
  • Identifying Hazards and Risks
  • Undertaking operations in accordance with OH&S procedures, CASA regulations, company’s operations manual and PPE manufacturer’s guidelines
  • Site selection for helicopter operations
  • Preparation, inspection, carriage and stowing of equipment prior to, during and following exiting from the helicopter
  • key roles and relevant responsibilities of helicopter crew
  • Correct method of carrying various types of equipment
  • Following instructions and procedures within the helicopter
  • Correct procedures for entering or exiting the helicopter including correct sequencing of activities from different heights and on different terrains
  • Actions to minimise movement during descent from helicopter
  • Safety and emergency procedures
  • Appropriate communication processes with crew persons including emergency hand signals
  • Meteorology
  • Bushwalking
  • Abseiling
  • Canyoning
  • Caving
  • Vertical rescue

Pre-Requisites

Assessment

Participants must be able to:

  • Undertake operations in accordance with OH&S procedures, legislative and operational guidelines
  • Prepare, inspect, carry and stow equipment prior to, during and following exiting from the helicopter
  • Demonstrate safe loading procedures of equipment
  • Follow instructions and procedures within the helicopter
  • Apply correct procedures for entering and exiting from the helicopter including correct sequencing of activities
  • Correct use of equipment
