All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV)

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to operate and maintain an ATV, navigate terrain, take relevant precautions, and implement safe riding practices.

Description

This course is intended for riders seeking the knowledge and skills required to safely operate an ATV over mixed terrain types in either an individual or professional capacity.

It covers the competency for maintaining and operating two and four wheel drive all-terrain-vehicles and ride-on machinery. It requires the application of fundamental skills and knowledge to safely utilise controls and features of ride-on vehicles, with or without attached equipment, and the ability to carry out basic maintenance procedures.

The course highlights the duty of care requirements to self, others and the environment.

This unit does not include tractors or motor vehicles, as they are covered by other units of competency.

Duration

The course can be conducted over a nominated time of 1 day.

Accreditation

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Risk Response & Rescue Certificate of Participation.

Course Content

  • Legal and safety requirements relating to the use of ATV’s 
  • Function of ATV controls 
  • ATV pre-use checks and maintenance 
  • Riding ATV’s on a specific course on flat and or slightly inclined terrain 
  • Riding an ATV on a specific course with trailer or trailer implement attached including reversing 
  • Knowledge of factors to be considered when riding on various and undulating terrain 
  • Operating a laden ATV  this has an implement attached, on various terrain 
  • Cleaning ATV’s and reasons for cleaning 
  • Inspection requirements for ATV’s and identifying damage after use 
  • Parking and securing  ATV’s to prevent unauthorised use

Prerequisites

There are no pre-requisites to this course.

Assessment

Participants are required to demonstrate an acceptable level of competency.

Participants must be able to demonstrate safe riding techniques, identify hazards and risks, and conduct appropriate maintenance duties including pre-operational checks.
