Accomplishments

  • Member of the NSW Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit for 25 years.
  • Attended approximately 100 incidents involving the rescue or recovery of persons from rail/train related incidents.
  • NSW Police representative on the NSW Government select committee for the development of a strategic plan for the removal and re-location of passengers on the underground rail system during an emergency evacuation.
  • Assisted as a training officer for members of the State Rail Fire Response Team.
  • Instructor for selected components of the syllabus for the Police Rescue Operators Course.
  • Rescue Coordinator for the combined services emergency incident response for the major underground rail disaster in 1999.
  • Rescue Coordinator for the Airport Rail exercise prior to opening of the service.

Snap-shot

Mark Powderly has a distinguished career in the fields of rescue, emergency management, search operations and terrorist responses. He is a member of the NSW Police Force and a qualified National Search and Rescue (NATSAR) Coordinator.

Mark has attended countless major search operations throughout his career and has contributed to the writing of training and technical manuals. His current Land Search activities involve the planning, implementation and coordination of large scale, multi-agency responses and training exercises.

Mark’s career in the Police Force has evolved within the elite NSW Police Rescue Squad, where he attained the position of Operations Coordinator. Mark has also spent lengthy periods as acting Operations Commander, a position which required him to assess and attend emergency incidents and disasters throughout NSW.

In his senior role within NSW Police, Mark has been instrumental in operational response plans and terrorist strategies for events and incidents including the Sydney Olympics, Thredbo Landslide Disaster, the Brooklyn Train Crash and several major land search operations.
