Including Appeals against Assessment and Assessment Records

Policy

RR+R delivers training designed to equip people to operate in difficult, physically demanding, and dangerous conditions. Accordingly, the company is uncompromisingly committed to individual assessment of the highest quality, tailored to the particular environments and conditions within which course participants will be required to exercise their acquired knowledge and skills.

All assessments for accredited competencies and courses will be conducted in accordance with the requirements of the related Training Package or accredited course, and will comply in all respects with Assessment & Workplace Training Package TAA04.

Procedures

Assessment

Prior to the course the Trainer will establish an Assessment Plan, detailing the assessment tasks to be undertaken, for review and approval by the Managing Director.

The Managing Director will discuss the assessment process, including the assessment tasks, with the Trainer to ensure it is appropriate to the course, the activities involved, and the competencies concerned, and complies with Assessment & Workplace Training Package TAA04 and the requirements of the Training Package / course.

The Training and Office Manager will provide the Trainer with Competency Record sheets for each participant together with the other materials he or she will require to conduct the course.

At the first session the Trainer will notify the class of the format and timing of the assessment tasks and explain the procedure for gaining Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) if not previously notified to participants.

Assessment tasks will be completed in accordance with the approved Assessment Plan. The tutor will record any absences and the reasons given for the absence.

Each participant will be advised of the result of each assessment as soon as practicable after the assessment has been completed. The Trainer may require a participant to carry out further work and/or a further assessment to satisfy the requirements of the task.

The Trainer will complete a competency record sheet for each participant, and return it to the Training and Office Manager within three days of the completion of the course.

Appeals against Assessments

Participants in accredited training courses have the right to appeal against an assessment with which they disagree on the following grounds:

  • They were not informed of the Assessment Requirements and Criteria for the course;
  • The Assessment Requirements and Criteria differed significantly from those advised to participants;
  • In the case of a Workplace Assessment a participant objects, on legitimate grounds, to a member of the assessing panel;
  • The assessment environment adversely affected a participant’s performance;
  • A participant does not agree with the results of the assessment

A participant must first appeal direct to the Trainer for the course, outlining any evidence for reassessment. The participant may nominate a third person to be present to act as an advocate.

The Trainer determines his or her response to the appeal and notifies the Managing Director of the outcome of the initial appeal.

If the dispute is unresolved the participant should request and complete an Appeals Form and forward it to the Managing Director within seven days.

The Managing Director will review the details of the assessment and of other assessments conducted during the course and discuss the matter with the assessor and the participant (and the participant’s employer if appropriate) to determine the issue.

The Managing Director will document his response and provide the appellant with a copy of the decision at the conclusion of the meeting.

If the appeal cannot be resolved at that point an independent external assessor and subject specialist acceptable to both parties will be retained to meet with them and decide the issue. The participant may nominate a third person to be present to act as an advocate. The decision of the external assessor will be final and binding on both parties. The external assessor will give each party a written copy of the decision, including the reasons for the decision, within two days of the meeting.

Any changes to the Assessment process arising from the appeal will be incorporated into RR+R materials, policies or procedures and advised to VETAB or any other interested parties.

Assessment Records and Reports

Trainers will complete a competency record sheet for each participant, sign it on completion, maintain it progressively, and return it to the Training and Office Manager, together with the evaluation forms from all participants, within two days of the completion of the course. The Training and Office Manager will compile and summarise the competency record sheets results, together with an Evaluation Summary of participants’ course evaluations, and forward them to the Managing Director.

The Managing Director will review the documents and where appropriate prepare a report The two documents will be forwarded to the Managing Director for review and, where applicable, for the preparation of a report to the client for whom the course was conducted.

From the competency record sheets the Training and Office Manager will prepare RR+R Certificates or Statements of Attainment for those participants acquiring the necessary competencies, and Statements of Attendance for all those other participants requesting them, together with RR+R's Certificates for signature by the Managing Director and subsequent despatch.

The participants’ results will be entered into Vettrak for long-term storage, and all competency record sheets and assessment documents for the course will be bundled together and filed away for storage.
